In the Absence of a Compass, Chart Your Institution’s Own North Star

02/16/2021 4:00 PM

Youth protection in higher education has grown exponentially over the past five years, especially considering the normal growth of higher education.  Developing standards and identifying trends can take time, however.  While there are not decades of experience pointing to a north star of solidified agreed-upon standards, there is data that is helpful to both institutions and individual programs.  In this presentation, we will share that data, as well as discuss how to use your position, whatever that may be, to influence decision-making, whether it be with trends, standards, or making the big summer 2021 decision.  After participating in our session, participants will learn:
•    Popular trends in youth protection policies.
•    Best practices to incorporate at the program level if there are no global institutional standards.
•    Using your position to influence decision-making around summer 2021 programming.

Mark Steven's photo

Mark Stevens, PhD

What a year—to say the least.  You all must be wondering what social-emotional health challenges your counselors will be bringing with them to their job.  Additionally, how will your counselors be ready to address some of the challenges their campers will be coming to camp with this upcoming summer? In this interactive presentation, participants will be provided with ideas and knowledge how to address the social-emotional health of their counselors.  An example of a quick needs assessment of your counselors will be provided that addresses the above.  Additionally, ideas about how to provide professional development to your counselor in the context of mental health protective factors will be shared.  This will include ideas about mindfulness training, gratitude practices and other self-care practices will be discussed.

Dr. Mark Stevens is a tenured professor and psychologist in the Educational Psychology and Counseling Department at California State University Northridge and teaches in the Marriage Family Therapy program. Previous to this position he was the director of the University Counseling Services at California State University Northridge (CSUN) and training director at University of Southern California.
